MIDI keyboards allow musicians to play thousands of different digital instruments on their computers. Unlike many computers, the Mac Book Pro will automatically recognize virtually any MIDI keyboard connected to it. This saves users from having to manually create a MIDI software connection within their operating systems. You can connect a MIDI keyboard to your laptop using just a few MIDI cables and an audio interface.
How To Connect MIDI Keyboard To MAC
- Plug the MIDI cable into the 'MIDI OUT' jack on your keyboard. Consult the user guide for your keyboard to find the exact location of the socket. The MIDI cable should have five pins that match the holes inside the output jack. Insert these pins into their corresponding holes. Move the cable after inserting it to make sure it is firmly connected.
- Insert the other end of the cable into the 'MIDI IN' jack on the MIDI interface. Consult the user manual for the interface to find out the exact location of the MIDI In jack. The jack will have 5 holes to match the 5 pins of the MIDI cable.
- Connect the MIDI interface to the Mac Book Pro computer with a MIDI to USB cable. Insert the MIDI end of the cable into the 'MIDI Out' jack on the interface. Insert the other end into an available USB port on your laptop.
- Turn on the MIDI keyboard and Mac Book Pro laptop. Plug the MIDI keyboard power cord into an electrical outlet. Press and hold the circular button on the right side of the keyboard of your Mac Book Pro computer. Wait for the laptop to turn on.
- Open the Garageband music application and wait for the program to recognize the keyboard. Open the Garageband app on your computer and let it load completely. A window will appear indicating that you have a new MIDI device available to use.
How to test your MIDI setup with the Audio MIDI Setup app
- Connect your MIDI controller (like a keyboard) to your Mac. If you are using a MIDI interface, connect it to your Mac and connect any controller to the MIDI interface.
- Open Audio MIDI Settings, which is in the 'Utilities' folder of the Applications folder.
- Select Window> Show MIDI Study. MIDI devices connected to your Mac appear as icons in the MIDI Studio window. Devices that are not currently connected will be greyed out.
